Before you Adopt
1. Do your homework & research owning a cat
2. Consider these questions next:
Will you be a responsible pet guardian?
We want all cat owners to spay/neuter their pets to decrease the problem of pet overpopulation. Will you make sure your cat is fixed in order to help solve this situation? Also, will you provide your cat with permanent ID such as a micro chip to ensure that if your cat gets lost he or she may be returned to you. Note: NCWL adoption fee includes all the above mentioned surgeries. Will you also ensure that your cat has access to veterinary care, food, water, shelter, love, exercise, training and grooming?
What are your living arrangements? Are they suitable for a pet?
Do you own your home or are you renting it? If you're renting does your landlord allow cats? Even though cats do not require a lot of room you might want to consider if the space is large enough for both you and the cat(s).
What kind of lifestyle do you live? Do you have time for a pet?
Cats do not require a very go-go-go life but they can get very lonely. Despite how much you want a feline companion if you work late or go out quite often you may want to reconsider getting a cat. We want to ensure that the cat you are seeking matches what you like to do.
Is it the right time to get a pet?
Are you planning on moving, going back to work or school or having a baby? It may not be the right time to bring in a family cat. We do not want something in your life to have an effect on your new cat.
Can you provide him or her with the correct time and discipline required in raising a pet?
Although cats are very independent creatures some cats require more attention than others. Depending on the cat's personality and circumstances, the cat may require more time than another cat.
Can you afford the costs?
We estimate the average cost to own a cat is $2542 annually. Are you able to afford the costs of a cat's pet care?
What is the lifespan of this animal?
Cats can have a lifespan of 15-20 years. Are you prepared to commit to your cat for their lifetime?
Who will be responsible for him or her?
Although kids may be enthusiastic at first, trying to teach responsibility to your children can be quite difficult. Please understand that adopting a cat is a family decision and children will not take on all of the duties involving the pet! We suggest for children to be at least ten years old to actively take part in the pet's care.
If you think you're ready to adopt, we will be happy to find your life long companion.
