Feeding your cat
We recommend that you feed wet and dry food to your cat. Dry food is usually left out all day for your cat to nibble on as well as fresh water. Wash the bowls frequently. You should use ceramic or metal bowls. Plastic bowls hold bacteria. A small amount of wet food is often given morning and evening. A kitten needs to be fed kitten food until they are 1 year old. Be sure to look for a dry food with meat as one of the main ingredients. Please avoid the colourful food you see on TV. Your cat may love it and you may think you are saving money. However, most of those foods are filled with unhealthy things and your cat may actually eat more than other high quality foods. Cats who eat this type of food often end up unhealthy, overweight and develop severe medical conditions that require expensive veterinary care. So, did you really save money?
Having problems getting your cat to eat? Try a variety of dry and wet foods until you find something he likes. Some cats are very fussy. Try fish flavours. The stronger smell may interest your cat more. Maybe put a bit of tuna juice on the food to encourage him. Do not let your cat go too long without eating. Kittens can crash suddenly and even adults can develop problems like fatty liver if they don't eat. If all else fails, buy the "cheap junk food" just to get them to eat. Once they are eating that well, gradually mix in good quality food to switch them over to something healthier. Sudden food changes can cause a cat (especially kittens) to get an upset tummy. Make gradual changes, though that may be difficult if you aren't aware of what the cat ate prior to coming to your home.
Do not give your cat milk. Most cats are lactose intolerant and will get tummy trouble.
Do not give kittens under 6 months "treats". They tend to get runny poop.
